Klintaine dry bed and karst falls

Klintaines pagasts, Aizkraukles novads, Latvija

The Karst Falls are a place steeped in legend and lore. The nature monument consists of the valley of the Klintaine or Buda Mill Stream with the falls in the riverbed - waterfalls and a stretch of dry bed. At the top of the riverbed and on the sides of the riverbed there are small dolomite outcrops. The river has a distinct gorge in its most pronounced section, but water only makes its way through it in the very rainy summer seasons. There are several water catchments in the channel, but the largest one is located in the middle of the channel and receives almost all the river runoff during low-water periods. The river itself disappears, but its gorge connects with the reservoir of the hydroelectric power plant built in Pļaviņas, where the underground stream now flows. Before the Daugava valley was flooded, the Klintaine River reappeared above ground as a spring on the banks of the Daugava.

This complex of natural formations is important on a national scale as one of the most distinctive and easily accessible sites for the expression of water rivers.
