Vietalva Brethren Cemetery Memorial

Vietalva, Vietalvas pagasts, Aizkraukles novads, Latvija, LV-5109

The memorial ensemble of the Vietalva Brethren Cemetery was established in 1968 to commemorate the events of the Second World War. The monument depicts the battle of Lāčplēsis with the Black Knight, which in the Soviet ideological system symbolically represented the victory of the Red Army over fascist Germany, while the alarm bells on the spire of a huge bayonet embodied the idea of being vigilant for one's country. The memorial was created by sculptors Z. Zvāra and V. Albergs, as well as architect E. Šēnbergs.

More than 500 fallen Soviet soldiers are buried in the Vietalva Brethren Cemetery. On the first Saturday of every August, a commemoration of the dead is still held here.
