Sunākste Evangelical Lutheran Church

Ģederti, Viesītes pagats, Jēkabpils novads, Latvija

Sunākste Church was built between 1827 and 1829 in the Empire style and has a three-storey tower with pointed eaves. The altar is in neo-Gothic style and is distinguished by its richness of Gothic elements. The church has an altarpiece 'The Ascension of Christ' (1844) by Johann Leberecht Egnik, which was replaced by a photocopy in 2004. There are memorial plaques to those who died in the First World War and in the Latvian freedom struggle, and to those who were deported to Siberia.

In 1989, a memorial stone to Elder Stender with an inscription from the "Book of High Wisdom" was unveiled near the church. Next to the church is the new cemetery, and across the road is the so-called Stender's Hill with the old cemetery. Stender's tombstone is a Daugava dolomite slab with an inscription carved on it. G.F. Stender, Latvian, b. 1714, died. 1714, 1796, with his gaspaž." Outside the fence of the old cemetery there is a lonely grave decorated with a white angel. Angela von Baer, who ended her life by suicide because of an unhappy love, is buried here. The Stender's Abbey Trail runs from the old cemetery to the former site of the rectory.
