New region

On 10 June 2020 the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia in the final reading approved the draft law "Law on Administrative Territories and Settlements" promoted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (MoEPRD). The reform of local self-governments has been approved, with the Saeima deciding to establish 42 local self-governments in Latvia instead of the current 119. This includes the new Aizkraukle municipality.

 The new Aizkraukle region unites six former municipalities and comprises 22 territorial units: Aizkraukle parish and Aizkraukle town, Bebru, Iršu, Koknese parish and Koknese town, Daudzeses, Seces, Sērenes, Sunākste, Staburaga, Jaunjelgava parish and Jaunjelgava town, Skrīveri parish, Mazzalves, Nereta, Zalve, Pilskalne parishes, Aiviekste, Vietalva, Klintaines parishes and Pļaviņas town.

The administrative centre of the region is Aizkraukle.

On 1 July 2021, the newly elected members of the Aizkraukle Regional Council met for the first session of the Council at the Aizkraukle Regional House of Culture. At the extraordinary session of the City Council, the binding regulations "Regulations of Aizkraukle Municipality" were approved, the aim of which is to establish a transparent organisation of Aizkraukle Municipality administration, decision-making procedure, rights of citizens in local administration, as well as other issues of municipal work organisation, with the aim of bringing the administration closer to the beneficiaries of services of Aizkraukle Municipality.
