Aizkraukle Museum of History and Art was founded in 1951 and has been located at the historic Kalna Ziedi homestead in Aizkraukle since 1989. The museum invites visitors to discover the history, cultural heritage and art of Aizkraukle Municipality through exhibitions, educational experiences and a varied programme of cultural events.
The museum’s permanent exhibition, Stories of Life along the Banks of the Daugava, explores life along the Daugava River from ancient times to the first half of the 20th century. It is complemented by temporary art and local history exhibitions, an open collection storage area featuring an extensive display of traditional farming tools, and museum education programmes for schoolchildren aligned with school curricula in history, home economics and Latvian literature.
The museum grounds are home to the Kalna Ziedi Sacred Oak, also known as the Sacrificial Oak, while Kalna Ziedi Hillfort is located nearby. The museum organises traditional Latvian seasonal celebrations, folk games and activities, creative and educational events, and programmes for visitors of all generations. The historic setting is also ideal for photo sessions and family celebrations, including weddings, christenings and anniversaries. A campfire area and tent pitches are available on the grounds.
The museum also operates a second visitor site, the Soviet Years exhibition, located in the Aizkraukle Parish Cultural Centre. It explores everyday life and cultural heritage from the 1950s to the 1980s.
