Memorial site of cliff Staburags and Vīgante manor park

Vīgante Park is one of the most picturesque places in the ancient valley of the Daugava, preserving the memory of the legendary Staburags Cliff. Established in the 19th century as a landscape park, it offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy magnificent views of the Daugava, explore local history, and discover a variety of remarkable points of interest. The sculpture “Daina” enriches the park’s cultural and historical setting, serving as a reminder of Latvia’s rich heritage of folk songs. At the Pēteris Barisons Gazebo, visitors can learn about the composer’s life and work, discover the traditions of the Latvian Song and Dance Celebration, and listen to his musical compositions. Along the park trail, characters from the legend “How the Animals Dug the Daugava” bring the tale to life, allowing visitors to experience its heroes and events up close. The park also features the wooden sculptures Jancis and Marčs, depicting the main characters of writer Valdis’ novel “The Children of Staburags”. Meanwhile, the Vīgante Park open-air stage remains an important cultural venue where local residents and visitors gather for concerts, festivals, and other events.

Honouring the legendary Staburags Cliff, a memorial site has been created in Vīgante Park, with the monument “God’s Ear” at its centre. This granite sculpture, created by sculptor Solveiga Vasiļjeva, symbolically preserves the memory of the flooded Staburags Cliff. The monumental stone structure is seamlessly integrated into the landscape, appearing as though it rises naturally from the soil of the Daugava ancient valley. The memorial was unveiled in 2003. Adjacent to the monument are daylily gardens featuring cultivars bred by Latvian plant breeders, with new varieties added each year. Visitors are also encouraged to stroll through the Grove of Unity, where oak trees planted by the Presidents of Latvia create a unique connection to the nation’s history.
