Spring has arrived! Nature is awakening as the first green shoots emerge and the warmth of the sun invites us outdoors. Make the most of this beautiful season—breathe in the fresh air, discover the Jaunjelgava area in its vibrant spring colours, uncover new and unique accommodation options, and enjoy delicious meals at nearby cafés.

Walking Routes for Nature Lovers

  • Jaunjelgava Daugava Promenade – This riverside promenade along the Daugava invites visitors to enjoy scenic walks while observing the river’s calm and steady flow. For those seeking a more active experience, the route is also suitable for cycling or rollerblading. The area offers designated rest spots as well as children’s playgrounds, making it ideal for visitors of all ages.
  • Jaunjelgava Historic Centre – The charm of Jaunjelgava’s historic centre lies in its outstanding and distinctive architecture, where centuries-old buildings blend seamlessly with modern elements such as the Selonia digital information stand and a contemporary wall mural. This walk offers added value when you visit the Jaunjelgava Tourism Information Point, where you can listen to stories about the town’s history, explore the current exhibition, and browse the local artisans’ shop.
  • Aklais (Jūgu) Bog Nature Trail – One of the most outstanding walking destinations in the Jaunjelgava area. Here, the raised bog landscape is characterised by largely undisturbed nature, expansive views, and unique habitats. Wooden boardwalks lead visitors on an approximately 2‑kilometre walk through the bog to a small lake, where the trail forms a loop and returns to the starting point. The route features designated rest areas with benches and tables, as well as informative panels introducing the local plant, animal, and bird species.
  • Sērene Karst Sinkhole – Located on the edge of the ancient Lauce River valley, this site marks a seasonal karst spring outflow in former stone quarries. Currently, a lively spring bubbles up at the bottom of the sinkhole and, seemingly from nowhere, forms a fast‑flowing stream. Its constant murmuring fills the surrounding area with sound, creating a striking natural experience. The descent to the stream is fairly steep, so sturdy and comfortable footwear is strongly recommended.
  • Staburags Memorial Site and Vīgante Park – In Vīgante Park, Staburags’ legendary children, Jancis and Marčs, await every visitor. Here, the skies are crossed not only by migratory birds heralding spring, but also by awakened mythical creatures from Latvian folk tales about the carving of the River Daugava. The sculpture “Daina”, standing quietly on the riverbank, observes all who pass by, while Pēteris Barisons’ pavilion invites visitors to pause and listen to the sounds of music. Nearby, the memorial site dedicated to the lost Staburags cliff encourages reflection and remembrance, and the commemorative sculpture “God’s Ear” stands ready to listen to every whispered thought.
