In Jaunjelgava, on Jelgava street 40, there is a preserved building, which from 1859-1941 served as the city's synagogue and was a Jewish meeting place, a place of prayer, study and teaching of the Torah and holy scriptures.
This building is the only one of the 5 synagogues and prayer houses that existed in the city until the Second World War. In July 1941, the city's Jews were imprisoned in this building and in the adjacent area, and from there they were all taken to the nearby woods and killed.
In the 1950s, the building was converted into a residential building. The historical significance and character of this building is not reflected in the environment of the city of Jaunjelgava.
On September 22, 2023, a memorial sign was unveiled at the building of the Great Synagogue in Jaunjelgava.
