Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš Museum "Riekstiņi"

Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš Museum "Riekstiņi" is located in the territory of Nereta parish (7 km to the E from Nereta), 2.5 km from the asphalt road P73 (Riga - Nereta - Subate) in a quiet, hilly area (0.5 km to the nearest homestead).

     The museum is located in the outbuilding of the 200-year-old farmstead "Riekstiņi" (Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš' "White Book" - Mūsmājas), a cultural monument of national importance.

     The museum attracts visitors with its real environment, where in a pristine, well-kept territory one can find more than one environmental and cultural object sketched in the "White Book", which, like the buildings and the surroundings, allows the visitor to feel and empathise with the world of Jaunsudrabiņš' childhood days, to understand the formation of his personality. By maintaining and interpreting this complex in a modern perspective, united with the creative heritage of Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš, which is preserved in the museum's collection: his books, photographs, art objects, documents and personal belongings, the visitor can grasp Jaunsudrabiņš' contribution to Latvian culture, while the ancient tools, habitation and ethnographic objects in the open collection perfectly describe the life on the Selija farm at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition, there are thematic, art and applied art exhibitions.

 Guided tours of the permanent exhibitions and displays are available in Latvian, Russian, Lithuanian and English. Several attractive activities have been developed: "Let's read the "White Book" from the pictures", "Trail of cultural objects - see, hear, feel", "Get-to-know "Neba maize pati came"", wedding reception "Gates of honour of the life of the bride and groom" and the activity for 4th grade pupils "Mūsmājas" within the "School bag" programme. Reading the image, we search and find a specific place; we see what changes have taken place there over the century (reading is encouraged, observation, evaluation and motivation skills are developed).

    There is a car park, public toilets, a fireplace, tents, access to the museum for people with disabilities (ramps); we can offer tent pitches.

    The mission of the Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš Museum "Riekstiņi" is to present the life and work of the painter, poet and writer Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš, as well as his closest literary companions - local residents/trippers.
