The Selonia region is becoming an increasingly accessible and attractive travel destination, integrating practical and digital solutions to enhance visitors’ experiences. As an excellent addition to the existing digital tourism information kiosks in Jaunjelgava and Nereta, as well as the previously developed travel routes and research studies on Selonia, a new informational brochure has been created: “Selonia – The Beginning is Today. Latvia/Lithuania.”
Over the centuries, the historical land of Selonia and Lithuania have developed close cultural, historical, ethnographic, and linguistic ties. Territories inhabited by the Selonians are located within present-day Latvia and Lithuania. The brochure primarily brings together information about the three municipalities involved in the project: Aizkraukle and Jēkabpils municipalities in Latvia and the Biržai district in Lithuania.
The brochure provides not only information about tourist destinations but also a more comprehensive insight into the Selonia region, revealing its diversity. Readers can find information about regional symbols, history, nature and landscapes, crafts and traditional skills, vernacular architecture and settlements, culinary heritage, traditional clothing, collections of antique objects, notable personalities, linguistic characteristics, sacred heritage and churches, Selonian manors and castles, community tourism initiatives and associations, contemporary cultural venues, educational programmes, and tourism centres.
The brochure has been published in three languages – Latvian, English, and Lithuanian – making it accessible not only to local residents but also to international visitors. One side of the brochure presents information about the part of Selonia located in Latvia, while the reverse side focuses on the Selonia region in Lithuania. The centre spread features a map highlighting points of interest, enabling readers to easily navigate the offer and connect the described themes with actual places to visit.
For example, travellers interested in manors and castles can conveniently locate several sites within the same area on the map and create a logical itinerary, complemented by nearby cultural attractions or culinary heritage stops, resulting in a diverse and meaningful day trip.
The brochure was developed based on previously conducted studies of Selonia in both Latvia and Lithuania. The studies, the brochure, and other solutions implemented within the project are available on the website: https://weekendinvillage.visitaizkraukle.lv/
The brochure was created within the framework of project LL-00132 “Development of Tourism Offer in Selonia” (Weekend in Village), co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027. The content is the sole responsibility of the Aizkraukle Municipality and may not necessarily reflect the views of the European Union.
