The Pļaviņas Roman Catholic Parish began its activities in the second half of the 1930s. Initially, Masses were celebrated in the chapel of the Latvian Army. Later, from 1947, Masses were held once a month in a private house on the banks of the Daugava River. Following the ban imposed in 1949 on religious organisations operating in private residences, the Pļaviņas parish joined the Koknese parish.
In 1987, the Pļaviņas Catholic Parish resumed its activities, thanks to the support of the local Evangelical Lutheran St. Peter’s Church parish, which made its church available for Catholic services. In 1988, under the leadership of Father V. Stulpins, work began on acquiring property for the needs of the parish.
In 2003, the establishment of the parish’s own church began with the reconstruction of an old warehouse building at 47 Raiņa Street. The Pļaviņas Catholic Church was consecrated on 16 December 2007 and dedicated to the Ascension of Christ.
