Skrīveri Dendrological Park

Skrīveru dendrārijs, Skrīveru pagasts, Aizkraukles novads, Latvija, LV-5125

The Skrīveri Dendrological Park was established in 1891 under the leadership of dendrologist Maximilian von Sivers. The park is located on an area of 16 hectares on the upper and lower terraces of the Daugava bank, where there is a great diversity of relief and soil. In places, the dolomite layer is covered only by a thin layer of soil, so special pits were created, filled with loam or peat, adding clay or gravel and arranging irrigation.

Sivers received the first seeds as early as 1881, and the first nurseries were established in 1882. Planting of the park began in the spring of 1891. In 1899, 451 species of trees grew there, and 15 years later - already 590 species. It collected trees from the entire temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, and the park was divided into 19 floristic geographical areas.

Today, the park has around 250 different species of trees. It also features historical elements of the manor – the castle staircase, a stone table, a tea terrace, a fountain and the ruins of the castle courtyard.

The park is located on the banks of the Daugava River and is a popular walking spot where you can combine nature and cultural history.
