Black reduction-fired clay pottery is an ancient craft tradition. Each kiln firing is unique and a sacred moment, as new vessels are brought into being… The vessels are shaped by hand and fired in a wood-fueled kiln for 8 to 10 hours, reaching temperatures above 1000°C. As the open flame moves through the stacked pottery, it interacts with the surfaces, creating distinctive, unrepeatable patterns.
By prior arrangement, visitors have the opportunity to visit the “Velniņš” kilnstead, see the kiln in person, and view the vessels created there. During the tourist season, pottery workshops are offered at “Velniņš,” while in the winter period, off-site workshops are organized for primary school children. Open only during the tourist season.
