Every place in the world has its own story - including Jaunjelgava! On 25 and 26 July we will celebrate the 378th anniversary of Jaunjelgava, because it was 378 years ago in 1647 that the story of Friedrichstadt (German) began!
"The city was founded where the Daugava's large rapids end. In the past, this was the place where goods were transhipped so that they could be transported along the river or the road, multiplying from the rapids. Jaunjelgava is located in the Lower Daugava Valley of the Central Latvian Lowlands, on the left bank of the Daugava, in the cultural and historical region of Selija, only 79 km from Riga and 15 km from Aizkraukle." (I. Bruņeniece). Jaunjelgava is a town with a rich history and has experienced countless events, survived two World Wars and their cruelties, experienced the Daugava floods and fires that have changed the town beyond recognition. But despite all this, Jaunjelgava has reborn and blossomed, each time with its head proudly held high. “From ancient times, it has preserved its narrow streets with old houses that once suffered from floods and stories of the local people's grit” (I. Bruņeniece).
