Gricgale manor centre

Pilkalne, Pilskalnes pagasts, Aizkraukles novads, Latvija, LV-5110

The center of the Gricgale Manor was created around 1750, when the property was acquired by the family of Kristoforas Korf. Later, it came into the possession of the Gārsene barons Budbergs. Only a few of the once 16 buildings have survived to this day, but they still tell the story of the historical area of Sēlija. The heart of the manor was the manor house with outbuildings - a horse stable, a cowshed, a barn, a distillery (1912), a school-church (1783) and a pub (1831). The buildings are designed as a regular building complex - like a small town of its time. Of particular importance is the Gricgale pub, which after the First World War became the property of craftsman Kristaps Mednis. His daughter - writer and teacher Lūcija Ķuzāne, was born here, and she preserved this place as a center of culture and memory. In 1983, she began organizing Poetry Days, events honoring writers, and meetings with guests from near and far in her pub. Today, the pub is still alive – it is cared for and protected by the "Upmales mantinieki" association, taking care that Gricgale's story does not disappear.
