Suseja river

Ērberģe, Mazzalves pagasts, Aizkraukles novads, Latvija

The Suseja is a right-bank tributary of the Mēmele River. It flows from the Aknīste lowland west of Subate, crosses the Selonia uplands and the Taurkalne plain, and enters the Mēmele near Iesalnieki. For 4.2 km, the Suseja also serves as a border river between Latvia and Lithuania.

There are three hydroelectric power stations on the river, which certainly affect its flow. The first is in Nereta, the second beyond Ērberģe, and the last just before the confluence with the Mēmele. Due to the last two, the section beyond Ērberģe is no longer as attractive for boating as before – the river (with a few exceptions) here is dammed and wide.

Along the banks of the Suseja there are interesting cultural and historical sites – the Nereta mill, R. Gurklis’s large wooden sculpture garden in Sproģi, “Kronīši” woodworking, and the Ērberģe church and manor. In Sproģi, near the river, there is a picnic and campfire site with a gazebo. The Ērberģe open-air stage park also has a campfire site.

The river can be accessed by car. Boating on the Suseja is a peaceful enjoyment of nature – there are no rapid currents here.
