Veseta Flood-Land Swamp

A protected complex of interconnected wetlands covering nearly 430 hectares. Discover one of the largest populations of yellow marsh saxifrage in Latvia and explore the diversity of birdlife!

A white cross, 3 metres high, has been erected at the site. Plaques on the cross bear the names of Latvian national partisans who were shot here on 2 July 1946. A dugout is located nearby. To make the site easier to find, a sign reading “White Cross” has been installed on the approach from the Vietalva side.

During the Second World War, intense military activity took place in the vicinity of Vietalva, and events related to the war continued even after its end. In the post-war years, the so-called “Pārups Group” operated in this area, led by Rihards Pārups (1914–1946). In 1946, ten partisans were shot at this location as a result of betrayal.
