"The Battle of Lāčplēsis" stele

The monument, created by sculptor Gaida Grundberga, honours the epic "Lāčplēsis" and its main hero, who wins the battle against the forces of darkness. Spīdala, who lived with her father Aizkrauklis in a castle on the banks of the Daugava River, also played an important role in the epic. Every year, on the Day of the Epiphany, Aizkrauklians gather at the monument to commemorate the heroes who fell in the fight for freedom.

As part of the NAF Day – Freedom Day celebrations, on 4 May 2026 in Aizkraukle, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, Chairman of the Aizkraukles Municipality Council Leons Līdums and Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds laid flowers at the “Lāčplēša cīņa” memorial stele.
