Improvement works on the Aizkraukle walking trail “Daugavas takas” are ongoing – on October 10, an insect hotel was installed along the trail.
The idea for the insect hotel arose from the intention to create a specially designed structure that would serve as a shelter for various insects – for example, solitary bees, ladybugs, and others. Insect hotels help maintain the natural balance, as the insects living in them pollinate plants and reduce the number of pests, thereby improving the ecological health of gardens and the surrounding environment.
A design competition for the insect hotel involved students from several schools in the municipality. The winner was Elīza Mālniece, a student of Skrīveri School of Music and Art. The further implementation – manufacturing and installation – was carried out by the company SIA “Latvijas dārzs”. Work is currently continuing on the development and production of an information stand, which will be installed next to the insect hotel.
The insect hotel is located at the beginning of the trail, near the Aizkraukle Secondary School building, at 5 Draudzības krastmala.
The restoration and improvement works of the Aizkraukle walking trail are being implemented within a cross-border project. The Aizkraukle Municipality and the Biržai District Municipality Administration in Lithuania are carrying out the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027 project No. LL-00045 “Preservation of biological diversity and natural ecosystems through the development of sustainable management of the recreational areas in Biržai and Aizkraukle.”
The aim of the project is to preserve biodiversity and green infrastructure by introducing sustainable management practices in recreational areas and by promoting an environmentally friendly and zero-waste lifestyle in Biržai and Aizkraukle.
