On September 20, we will celebrate Baltic Unity Day in Jaunjelgava! This year marks 25 years since Baltic Unity Day was included in the official calendars of both Latvia and Lithuania as a day of remembrance. We celebrate this day as a testament to the close kinship and strong ties between Latvians and Lithuanians, referring to a medieval historical event – the Battle of Saule on September 22, 1236. In that battle, the combined forces of the Semigalians in Lithuanina and Semigallians in Latvia defeated the knights of the Order of the Sword Brothers in a fierce battle, significantly influencing the course of the subsequent Crusades.
The event will feature the participation of the speakers and members of parliament of both countries, as well as ministers of culture and local government leaders, an extensive concert program, exhibitions, master classes and creative workshops, and a crafts market throughout the day. More information will follow!
Information was collected and compiled by the Jaunjelgava Tourist Information Point, located at 33 Jelgavas Street, Jaunjelgava.
